Brussels Sprouts Same as broccoli. Also detoxifies the liver from the effects of aflatoxin. (cancer producing fungus found in peanuts, corn, etc)

Cabbage Stimulates immunes system, kills bacteria and viruses, protects against radiation poisoning, Juice heals ulcers. Contains more anticancer agents than any other vegetable (chlorophyll, dithiolthiones, flavonoids, indoles, isothiocyanates, phenols, Vit E & C.) Best eaten raw.

Carrot blocks cancer (carotenes), lowers cholesterol, best eaten cooked to release carotenes.

Cauliflower See other cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and Brussels sprouts. Not high in carotenes or chlorophyll so not as effective as the others.

Cherry Aids gout. Human dose 15-25/day for a week then 10/ day after. Black Cherry common names.—Wild cherry, wild black cherry, cabinet-cherry, black choke, rum cherry, whisky-cherry, Virginian prune-bark.

Habitat and range.—The black cherry occurs in woods or open places and is most abundant in the Southeastern States, but its range extends from Nova Scotia to Florida, westward to Texas, and north through Oklahoma, the eastern portions of Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota.

Description.—This tree sometimes reaches a height of 90 feet and a maximum trunk diameter of 4 feet. The trunk is straight and covered with rough black bark, but the young branches are smooth and reddish. The smooth shining leaves are about 2 to 5 inches long. The long drooping clusters of small white flowers are borne at the ends of the branches, usually during May. The cherries, which ripen about August or September, are round, black, or very dark purple, about the size of a pea, and have a sweet, slightly astringent taste. Kat Raddatz

Chili pepper Lung tonic: expectorant, alleviates bronchitis, decongestant. (capsaicin) Eases pain. of arthritis. Destroys intestinal parasites. Dissolves blood clots. Causes burning sensation of the anus upon defecation.

Corn Lowers immunity. Oil lowers cholesterol including good cholesterol.

Cranberry Prevents urinary tract infections (uti's ,cystitis) by preventing bacteria from attaching to cells. Kills some viruses and some bacteria, prevents formation of calcium stones, deodorizes urine. Is a preventative rather than a cure.

Currant See blueberry. Anthocyanosides are in skin of black currant, not throughout whole berry as in blueberry.

Eggplant Inhibits rise in cholesterol from eating fatty foods. Blocks convulsions (scopoletin and scoparone). Contain protease inhibitors to help counteract cancer causing agents.

Fig Shrinks cancer tumors, aids digestion (ficin), kills bacteria and roundworms. Major food source of some parrot species.

Garlic Broad-spectrum antibacterial (over 72 infections agents listed) (allicin), antifungal, antiparasitic, antiprotozoan, antiviral, anticancer., antihypertensive. Stimulates immune system, relieves respiratory ailments, thins the blood-antithrombotic (ajoene). Antioxidant in liver damage. Allicin is formed when garlic is cut or crushed. If the aroma-allicin-is destroyed, as in cooking, garlic is no longer a microbe killer, although has other therapeutic uses. It is used by physicians in Japan, China, Russa, India, Poland. Japan's Kyolic is the purported to be the only product found to contain the active ingredient needed to raise immunological function. Fresh is best.

Ginger Prevents motion sickness, anticoagulant more potent than garlic (gingerol), lowers cholesterol, prevents cancer.

Grains - acid Acid base grains are : Barley, Wheat, oats, rye Grains - alkaline Alkaline Base grains are: millet, buckwheat, soy, sprouted grains, quinoa.

Grape Contain polyphenols and tannins. Effective against poliovirus and herpes simplex virus in test tubes. Popular in 'grape cure' for cancer.

Grapefruit Heart medicine, lower cholesterol, (a polysaccharide unique to grapefruit found in its pectin)cleans out arterial plaque (galacturonic acid) To get the benefit, the pulp and section membranes must be consumed, or use capsules.

Honey Disinfects wounds and sores, great for use as a salve, hastens healing . The quality and contaminants in honey would depend upon the manufacturers, quality control & mass production etc. Clostridium botulinum spores can't be a in all honey produced. Honey is not a man made substance, obviously coming from bees and there is a major difference in the quality and production for organic producers then those that produce cheaper mass quantities for large companies, grocery stores etc.

Heating the honey to a minimum of 200 degrees will help to remove any possible bacteria or spores for the same reason we don't use raw eggs in health shakes due to the salmonella bacteria. One would become ill using raw eggs, but once the eggs are heated or cooked the bacteria is killed. Heating to above 200 degrees will kill the germs. Kale Blocks several types of cancer.(carotenoids, esp beta carotene, chlorophyll) Cooking releases carotenes. Use both cooked and raw.

Lemon / Lime High in pectin and vitamin C. Extract kills roundworms, oil kills fungi.

Melon Anticoagulant (adenosine) High in beta carotene.

Mushroom Shiitake, oyster, enoki, tree ear, mitaake-but not the popular American button mushroom: Stimulates immune system, effective against autoimmune disease, inactivates viruses (lentinan) by stimulating interferon, anti cancer. The button mushroom contains hydrazides that can cause cancer, but they are inactivated by cooking.

Nuts High in trace minerals, protease inhibtors and polyphenols (which block cancer) Peanuts and peanut butter are often contaminated by a mold called aflatoxin, which causes liver cancer and is toxic to birds.

Molasses High in iron. Avoid for birds prone to hemachromatosis. (Iron storage disease)

Oats Good for heart, cholesterol, blood sugar, skin inflammation, and laxative.

Olive Oil Good for heart: reduces LDL raises HDL (cycloarthanol), thins blood. Contains monounsaturated fats. Maintains integrity of cells by fighting free-radical damage. Extra virgin, cold pressed is best.

Onion Increases HDL, thins blood, prevents clots, kills bacteria, relives lung congestion. Actions are much like garlic's. Prevents fat absorption if eaten with high fat meals. Prostaglandins lower blood pressure. Stabilizes blood sugar if consumed with sugar. Effective against E.coli, salmonella. Strong yellow or whte onions are most effective, mild onions are not.

Orange High in Vitamin C, which counteracts carcinogens called nitrosamines. Lowers cholesterol (pectins), internal antiseptic. Juice is not protective. Pulp and membranes must be consumed. Pea Contraceptive (m-xylohydroquinone) by interfering with reproductive hormones progesterone and estrogen. Rich in soluble fiber, control blood sugar, concentrated protease inhibitors (anti-cancer)

Purslane Highest plant source of Omega 3 fatty acids

The 'scientific name' for Purslane is: Portulaca oleracea.

Sometimes it grows wild in many lawns as a weed. You can also find it at K-mart or any plant nursery as single plants or in the hanging baskets. I'm not sure if you can find it this time of year though. It's going to be a plant that grows close to the ground, and has thick, fleshy (succulent) looking leaves....soon spoon shaped, some oblong, depending on type/color. Sometimes the stems will be reddish to purple.

The flowers are usually five petaled and yellow or pink....on wild, and many colors through a nursery. The flowers usually close in the afternoon. When I used to live in upstate NY we always had it in rock gardens and bedding plants around other flowers. When it spreads along the ground it makes a nice *carpet* of showy colors during midday.

It doesn't grow wild down here so I have to keep either buying it or growing it. I'm learning that I'm going to have to put wire cages around the plants because the cats, wild birds, pigeons, and neighbors dogs keep nibbling on it til it's gone

Purslane contains mucilage, plant acids, sugars, vitamins A, B1, C, calcium, and several minerals. According to my Florida herb book Dr. Artemin P. Simopoulos, a former chairwoman of the U.S. NationalInstitute of Health, noticed that purslane, which she cooked in her native Greece, looked much like fish oil. Laboratory investigation showed that it is the richest known plant source of the Omega-3 acidsotherwise found mostly in fish oils. These are thought to help reduce cholesterol and blood pressure and may strengthen the immune system.

As to human use, all parts can be used in salads. The leaf and stem have a slight vinegary taste. It can be steamed, added to soups or casseroles, mixed with eggs or pickled for winter. Susanne

Seaweed/Kelp Kills bacteria - E.coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella, Staphylococcus, Aspergillus, Fusarium, and Shigella. Blocks cancer (fucoidan), boosts immune system.

Spinach High in carotenes and chlorophyll so fights cancer. Reduces cholesterol.by accelerating the conversion of cholesterol to coprostanol , which is excreted. High in calcium and oxylate, which cancel each other out. Spinach and the Oxalate Debate

Cooked spinach is not good for you at all - especially in large and/or constant quantities. Raw, on the other hand, is OK in *reasonable* amounts. Caution is still the by word here as it does some freaky things to the assimilation and absorption of some nutrients.

The basic problem with cooked or raw spinach is that if one is predisposed to gouty afflictions - eat it sparingly as it contains purines. It can also assist in the development of kidney stones as it also contains a higher-than-average amount of active oxalates.

Oxalic acid  prevents calcium absorption.

To delve a little deeper...'organic' oxalic acid is one of the important elements needed to maintain the tone of, and to stimulate peristalsis (contractions of the intestines, occurring in waves, which propel the intestinal contents onward). When a food is raw, whether whole or in the form of juice, every atom in such food is vital organic and replete with enzymes. Therefore, the oxalic acid in our raw veggies and their juices is organic, and as such is not only beneficial (in normal doses) but essential for the physiological functions of the body.

The oxalic acid in cooked and processed foods, however, is definitely dead, or inorganic, and as such is both pernicious and destructive. Oxalic acid readily combines with calcium. If these are both organic, the result is a beneficial constructive combination, as the former helps the digestive assimilation of the latter, at the same time stimulating the peristaltic functions in the body.

When the oxalic acid has become inorganic by cooking or processing the foods that contain it, then this acid forms an interlocking compound with the calcium even combining with the calcium in other foods eaten during the same meal, destroying the nourishing value of both. This results in such a serious deficiency of calcium that it has been known to cause decomposition of the bones. This is why one should never eat cooked or canned spinach.

As to the oxalic acid itself, when converted into an inorganic acid by cooking or processing the food, it often results in causing inorganic oxalic acid crystals to form in the kidneys.

Please keep in mind, however, that certain herbs - i.e., wood sorrel have so much oxalic acid within that too much ingested can cause severe stomach & kidney irritation, kidney damage, internal bleeding and/or diarrhea. Minimal amounts in a salad, if one is healthy, would be alright but I still wouldn't recommend it. Sheep's Sorrel, a constituent of Essiac, on the other hand is considered a low-toxicity plant if not ingested in excessive amounts - especially shouldn't be ingested by those with severely compromised renal systems.

Oxalic acid forms notably insoluble salts with calcium, as I have said, and in this form is also found in the dock and rhubarb families (Rumex and Rheum) especially, but is also in many common foods - tea, beet, parsley, and, of course, spinach - and in small quantities in many other types of plant material. The main potential problem with oxalates is in some types of urinary stones, formed by precipitation of excessive oxalates in acid urine.

All my texts refer to the oxalic problem in dogs as being directly related to the same calcium absorption problem that humans suffer from ingestion.

So...basically...don't go overboard. If you feel the need to feed this highly nutritious plant to anyone (animal or man) - go raw only and limit it's intake.

Squash / Pumpkin Seeds expel worms. High in carotenes (antioxidants) and protease trypsin inhibitors, which fight viruses. Carotenes are transformed to Vitamin A by the body, which increases immuntiy against diseases.

Strawberry Destroys viruses (poliovirus, echovirus, reoviruse, coxsackievirus, herpes simplex virus. High in fiber pectin, block the formation of cancer-causing nitrosamines, fight gout.

Sugar As a salve kills bacteria and heals wounds.

Tea Green or Black, (camellia sinensis) not herbal tea. Destroys bacteria and virus, fight infections, prevents cancer, lowers blood pressure, strengthens capillaries, protects against long term radiation. Strong anti-oxident. Contains tannins (epigallo-catechin-gallate), fluoride, caffeine (decaffeinatted still works)

Tomato Anti-cancer (lycopene - another carotene). Claimed by some to aggravate arthritis because it is a member of the nightshade family, like potatoes are.

Turnip Anticarcinogenic (glucosinolates), part of the cruciferous vegetable family like cabbage.

Rutabagas are part of this family. Greens are especially nutritious and beneficial.

Watercress Watercress contains isothiocyanates and is rich in vitamins A,B1,B2,C, and E, and minerals (especially iodine, iron, and phosphorus). Allyl isothiocyananate has broad spectrum antibiotic activity. Good detoxifying herb and its high content of Vitamin C and minerals makes it a remedy that is particularly valuable for chronic illnesses. It is thought to stimulate the appetite and relieve indigestion and to help in cases of chronic bronchitis (especially if there is excessive mucous), to be generally stimulating and to act as a powerful diuretic

Wheat Bran High in fiber Wheatgrass .

Yam Anti carcinogentic, high in carotenes, protease inhibtors polyphenols, antioxidants. May stimulate the production of eggs in the ovaries because they contain a hormone like substance that triggers the release of FSH. Sweet Potatoes and Yams

Both sweet potato & yam are high in fiber, beta carotene, potassium. 1 small yam or sp have about 28g carbohydrate; 400mg potassium; 120 calories & 2.2g fiber. Vit A & C as well as mineral content will vary depending on soil grown in. They also contain protease inhibitors which have been found to stop cancer in studies using animals other than H. sapiens. Due to water soluble fiber content it is also helpful in lowering cholesterol levels in H. sapiens. In studies eating a half cup a day of sp reduced the incidence of lung cancer in current of former smokers by 50%. Therefore is would be an excellent addition to add to any animals diet who H. sapiens smokes as the benefits extend to *some* protection from second hand smoke. Yams are tubers which grow in Africa and the Caribbean also Central America; Sweet potatoes grow here in the USA. One difference between Yams & sp is yams are high in FSH which maycontribute to multiple births in mammals.
